Hardwick Tiger Cubs Bird Project

Tiger Cubs making pine cone bird feeders

Service Learning Coordinator Sarah Mildren recently met with a Tiger Cub Den from Hardwick, and started a three part service learning project focused on birds.  The first part of this series included the boys sitting quietly as they watched a powerpoint presentation all about 10 common local birds.  They enthusiastically asked and answered several questions during this time.  The boys then got a chance to get up and move around as they played a fun matching game with pictures of the birds they are learning.  After burning off some of their energy, the boys refocused as Sarah and the den parents helped them make pinecone bird feeders.  The Tiger Cubs got to bring the feeders that they made home, along with bird identification sheets so that they can practice identifying the birds.

Soon the boys and their parents will be meeting with Sarah again to complete part two of the project, in which they will build a variety of bird houses which will be hung on EQLT properties.  Part three of this project will be held during President’s Day Weekend in February, when the boys will be participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Mandell Hill property.
